Here's John McCain as a candidate for U.S. Senate in October 1986 (posted by AZ blogger Tedski who has a PDF of the original newspaper report):
Did you hear the one about the woman who is attacked on the street by a gorilla, beaten senseless, raped repeatedly and left to die?
When she finally regains consciousness and tries to speak, her doctor leans over to hear her sigh contently and to feebly ask, ‘Where is that marvelous ape?’
Now we know why John McCain didn't think it was a problem to accept $300,000 raised by Clayton Williams, who had this to say about rape:
As long as it's inevitable, you might as well lie back and enjoy it.
For the record, just to be fair, at the time McCain's spokesman said that McCain "does not recall" telling the joke. Well, we all know about McCain's memory issues, now don't we? And who could forget his cruel, sexist joke about Chelsea Clinton?
Does anybody think any of this is funny? As Aravosis points out, McCain was 49 at the time.
